- Rosso di Montalcino 2017, Castello Banfi
Grape variety 100% Sangiovese.
Growing Conditions: The growing season started slightly late, followed by abundant rain in May and June. Temperatures in June were cool and well below seasonal averages; in the beginning of July the temperatures began to warm up and became quite hot by mid-month. Temperatures cooled down again in August again with notably cool nights, which significantly contributed to the quality of the fruit, both in terms of aromas and natural acidity. From the middle of August through the months of September and October rainfall was scarce, resulting in an excellent harvest.
Date of Harvest: Mid-September
FermentationMethod: In temperature-controlled hybrid stainless steel and oak tanks
Temperature: 20-30 degrees centigrade
Length: 7-10 days
Malolactic: Yes, in barrique
Length of barrel aging:1 year
Origin of barrel: 50% French Oak Barriques, 50% Slavonian Oak Casks
Special comment by the wine maker: The outstanding seasonal weather pattern in September and October, with warm temperatures and little rainfall, gave us a great harvest, particularly for Sangiovese.
Tasting Comments: Ruby red in color. The aromas are fruity with notes of plum, blackberry, violet and a delicate hint of licorice. On the palate, the important structure is immediately perceived; it is round and vigorous, with a pleasant finish and an amazing persistence.
